Lääne County covers 2383 km2, comprising a modest 5.3% of Estonia. However, it boasts 237 islands and a coastline on the mainland alone measuring almost 400 km.
The country’s most extensive canebrakes and meadows (coastal, water and wooded) are found here, as are large bogs and wetlands, coastal terraces and massive boulders. The mild climate and lime-rich soils also make it an ideal place for plants that can’t grow elsewhere in Estonia – which is why you’ll find so many orchids here. Other landscape features you’ll see include sand dunes, coastal ridges and coastal lakes that are slowly turning into lagoons. Areas by the sea form perfect nesting and stopover sites for many birds, too.
